Activity #1 Rome underground: the Catacombs
Desc: The idea is to offer a service that is interested in transferring tourists from the neuralgic points of the city of Rome to the catacombs using a methane Shuttle Bus with an onboard audio guide, with the purpose of reconciling the traditional nature of our tours with more ambitious ideas of sustainable tourism and environmental protection. Our package will allow you to reach and visit the catacombs , which are one of the largest one in Rome and where you can visit 17 km of tunnels and corridors divided into 4 different levels, for a total of 150,000 burials, and a semi subterranean Basilica. By visiting this site you will have the opportunity to get to know more information about some aspects of the life of the Christian communities of the early centuries, their faith in the resurrection and eternal life, admiring its testimony, that remained untouched over the centuries in symbolic decorations of stone fragments and magnificent frescoes, a sign of the relationship with God and of the cult of the martyrs buried in this cemetery. • Domitilla Catacombs The Domitilla catacombs are the largest and the oldest underground cemetery in Rome, part of the property of Flavia Domitilla dated to 120 A.D. In the Flavi family, in the first century, there were two female figures named Flavia Domitilla: - the first is the wife of the consul of 95 Flavio Clemente; - the second is the granddaughter of the consul himself, venerated as a martyr in the fourth century. The catacomb therefore owes its name to one of the two Domitillas, of the family of the Flavi, converted to Christianity and therefore persecuted. The frescoes preserved are an expression of the faith of the early Christians. In the heart of the catacomb there is the only semi underground Basilica in Rome that is dedicated to the Black Martyrs and Achilleus, and to the Saint Peter’s daughter. • Saint Callixtus Catacombs They were the official cemetery of the Church of Rome in the 3rd century. In them were buried about half a million Christians, including dozens of martyrs and sixteen pontiffs. They take their name from the deacon San Callisto who, at the beginning of the 3rd century, was appointed by Pope Zeffirino to the administration of the cemetery. Since 1930 they have been entrusted to the care of the Salesians of Don Bosco The underground cemetery consists of several areas. The Crypt of the Popes is the most sacred and important place of these catacombs, called "the little Vatican" because there were buried 9 popes and probably 8 dignitaries of the Church of the 3rd century. Along the walls are the original Greek inscriptions of 5 popes. On 4 tombstones, next to the name of the pontiff there is the title of "bishop", because the Pope was considered the head of the Church of Roma • Saint Sebastian Catacombs The site, affected by funerary presences since the 1st century A.D. and the development of a vast Christian cemetery from the 3rd century A.D., was originally called ad catacumbas ( "near the cavities"), for the presence in the area of pits of pozzolana. It was precisely the complex of San Sebastiano, which became one of the most important in Rome over the centuries, that gave the name of "catacomb" to all the other underground Christian cemeteries. on the surface there is a basilica , originally called Basilica Apostolorum, built in the first half of the fourth century over a more ancient sanctuary linked to the memory of the apostles Peter and Paul; only later the church was dedicated to the martyr Sebastian, buried in the catacomb below at the beginning of the 4th century. Below the Basilica of San Sebastiano there are two complexes characterized by beautiful frescoes in excellent state of conservation, traditionally called "Villa Grande" and "Villa Piccola".
